If you can have one for the price I paid I believe it’s a worthy replacement to stock flat panel speakers, and an acceptable alternative to true surround sound. I actually bought this at an online outlet site for a little over one bill $. I had not read any reviews online and this speaker system is pretty much non-existent for sale online so I was a little nervous after I had bought this. There are a few quirks that would put off most people from buying, such as a lack of HDMI, and the standard definition on screen setup required to see any changes of audio settings. The sound bar is very large, almost as wide as my 50 inch plasma, so that might be something to consider as well. The remote is a little confusing and attempts to integrate itself as a universal remote but fails as such. I believe the only thing Altec Lansing got right with this rather large sound bar is the cool modern design and the theatre-like sound. I think a lot of people would be interested to know that for movies and regular tv watching it actually outperforms my 5.1 surround HTIB that I paid nearly three times as much. I find myself struggling to hear dialogue with my surround sound, so this is the shining point of the PT7031; it has a perfect balance for dialogue and music so you don’t have to constantly turn the volume up and down. It does also have an option for an external subwoofer, and I have not attempted to utilize this because it already has pretty good low end reproduction. This is by no means a replacement for any high end 5.1 surround systems, but it is a good compromise for the type of people who do not want to bother with messy wiring. So bottom line, if you want good sound and don’t mind switching back and forth with an on screen audio setup this might be for you, but I would not spend more than what I paid for this.

I bought this from the Altec Lansing website. It was clearanced/discontinued for $100 having had an original price of almost $600. I would say it’s barely worth the $100 I paid. First off, this is not a 5.1 system. I guess it would be a 3.0 system. Most noticeably the subwoofer output is not a true low frequency (LFE) channel. It’s called “enhanced bass” in the manual.

Beyond these deceptive marketing gimmicks, the couple other gripes I have about this system that would have made it more of a value is it doesn’t have a radio tuner built in. Next is it only has indicator lights (no display) so at any distance it is very difficult to tell what input it is on. You also have to toggle through the inputs (twice since each input has analog and digital). This is what makes the indicator lights annoying. From sitting you toggle through the inputs yet can’t see what you are on.

The other drawbacks are discussed by other reviewers so they don’t need restating. All in all this is probably bottom-of-the-barrel as far as powered soundbars go. The sound quality is what I would call barely adequate for a home theater. An improvement over tv speakers and not as unyieldy as an actual wired 5.1 system, but that’s it.

We have a 40″ LCD flatscreen with decent speakers, and we love to watch movies…

Are you tired of saying, “What did he/she say?” and then pausing, rewinding, replaying 3 times to find out? We certainly were. Because if you turn up the sound on many TVs and older sound systems, the effects and soundtrack drown out the dialogue or center channel.

I think movies are EQ’d for 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround. Problem with that scenario is that those 5.1 systems are expensive, obtrusive, time-consuming to install, not to mention somewhat ugly.

So we took a chance and ordered the Altec Lansing PT7031. It’s made our viewing/listening experience 100% better–and it looks sleek on top of the entertainment console (our widescreen is wall-mounted and we’re debating about whether to use the wall mount bracket that came with the PT7031 or not).

IMPORTANT NOTE: Setup with optical cable connections, as they simulate 5.1 surround and separate the sound far better from our experience (we had it set up with RCA cables until our opticals arrived from meritline a couple days later, so we really noticed the difference).

It’s maybe not worth the full $600 on Altec Lansing’s site, but can be purchased for about 1/2 of that now. To us, it’s worth every penny of the $300 we spent!

Very good quality for this price, lacks HDMI input but has 3 other input types, coax, optical and rca, so sounds good, easy to install, neat, looks good, no messy cables and speakers all over the room.

i purchased 7031 cause i have no space for the rear speaker behind me with my present room setup.sound was excellent but there was a problem it did not work for me with the remote. i then purchased the 8051 with rear speakers adjusting my room setup and wow incredible for me there is no need for additional sub the altec sub is very good and there are 2 setting for sub normal and deeper.and its wireless no cables running around.for me as a past owner of the top highest audiophile system with 7 separate amps and speakers a processor and a 15 inch top of the line sub.best cables. i am very happy with this system.with good optical cables connections for sound ,there is no need for hdmi connection cable with the altec only a simple video cable that comes with it only to see the setup menu. enjoy.

p.s sound bar is only 40 inch not 50 inch long as on another review and fits nicely on the tv stand shelf under the tv.
